PURPOSE:Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It works by decreasing the level of a natural hormone in the body that is involved in the growth and development of the prostate and hair follicles. It is used in the treatment of male and female pattern hair loss, for example.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:Finasteride is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to finasteride. Finasteride should not be used in patients with impaired liver function. Finasteride may cause some unwanted effects in patients with impaired liver function, such as increased sweating, decreased sex drive, and fatigue. It is also contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the drug. In the treatment of hypertension, finasteride is recommended in patients with impaired liver function and in patients who have been treated with other diuretics or medications.
DOSAGE:This is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. The usual dose is 1-2 mg/day. Take the medication at the same time each day and for the duration of your treatment. Do not take it more than once a day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once to make up for a missed one. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed one.
